banana bread bars with brown butter glaze

I had 2 sad bananas sitting in the fridge browning their lives away sooo I looked up this recipe and adapted it.

  • bars
    • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup sour cream
    • 1/4 cup butter
    • 1 egg
    • 2 ripe bananas
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup all purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • glaze
    • 3 tablespoons butter
    • 1 & 1/2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 tablespoons milk
Cream together the sugar and butter. Add the sour cream, eggs, banana, and vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix dry and wet mixtures and fold in walnuts. Bake at 375*F for 30 minutes.
While the bars are baking, heat the butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it boils. Keep stirring until the butter turns brown and immediately remove from heat. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk and whisk until smooth. Pour the glaze over the warm bars when they are done and spread evenly.
I was thrilled to learn that I had finally reached a new baking checkpoint – making a glaze! I have had to use frosting from a can in the past because of not being able to get the consistency right.
